BMW X6: The rapid SUV

BMW X6

Remember how SUV coupes were considered a novelty? BMW claims that the X6 debuted in 2007 was the first, but I like to remind people of the 2006 SsangYong Actyon. The X6 is already in its third iteration and has sold half a million units worldwide.

As previously said, it is a parody of the modern X5. So, how does it set itself apart? Primarily using visual language. Every panel is unique; even the windscreen is set back at a deeper angle. The slope of its roof and the bulging of its hips are distinct features. The airflow vents and exhaust ports use artistic methods to seem even more significant than their already huge dimensions.

The BMW X6 has arrived to continue what it began. The first-generation X6 established a new aesthetic style for SUVs: the sharply slanted roof, which sacrifices some luggage volume for flair. Consider it an X5 SUV that heads to the gym. Its athletic antics extend beyond its appearance. The standard engine is a 375-hp turbocharger inline-six engine that provides plenty of punch to the X6. The M60i is more powerful, with a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine designed for pounding the ground at high speeds. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automated gearbox and all-wheel drive. The 617-hp X6 M is considerably more aggressive but is assessed individually.

The Generational Change of BMW X6

BMW X6 Generations

Starting in 2008, the BMW X6 dramatically impacted the market with its variants, xDrive 35i and xDrive 50i. They were starting at $52 thousand and $63 thousand. Both were All wheel drive and packed a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 35i had a 3-liter inline 6, while the 50i had a 4.4-liter V8. The generation was known as E71. Then in the year 2013-14 came a facelift version of it. Nothing changed as such, but some new features were introduced.

Then came the F16, not the jet but similar to it. The 2ndgeneration X6 had a sportier look. The car had angular edges and gave a demonic vibe. However, bulky had packed much punch. 2015-19 was the time, and it had two trim options. The sDrive 35i had both front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive options. Then the xDrive 50i, which was All wheel drive. The 8-speed automatic had two engine options—the 3-litre Inline 6 for the 35i and the 4.4-litre V8 for the 50i.

The BMW G06 is the pinnacle of engineering. A few adjustments were made to the 2023 3rd Generation BMW X6 SUV. In the United States, the X6 is offered in two versions, with the basic xDrive40i model being the least expensive. The base price is $70,100, with a $995 destination charge. The base price of a BMW X6 M50i is $89,100, which may be significantly increased depending on how much you're prepared to pay. A fully outfitted model will cost more than $110,000 with the same two options of trims available. The 40i makes the most of its 335-horsepower/331-lb-ft turbocharged inline-six to produce spectacular performance, whilst the M50i is a true hardcore, with its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8's 523 hp and 553 lb-ft slingshotting it to 60 mph in less than four seconds.

And finally, the upcoming 2024 facelift for the G06. A mid-cycle refresh of an automobile that debuted in the United States as a 2019 model, with revisions intended to improve its aesthetic, efficiency, and performance.

What’s it packing?

BMW X6 Engine

Underneath the BMW X6 40i hood resides a formidable force - a robust turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine coupled with a 48-volt hybrid system, delivering a resounding 375 horsepower. Paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and harnessed by all-wheel drive prowess, the X6 40i shares this mechanical configuration with its counterpart, the M60i. However, it's in the realm of power that the divergence becomes apparent; the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V-8 of the M60i surges ahead with even greater might, showcasing its dominance on the asphalt. A test run on our track showcased the M60i's authoritative 523 horses and an impressive 553 pound-feet of torque, catapulting it to the 60 mph mark in a mere 3.8 seconds. Yet, a remarkable revelation awaits - the X6 M commands a staggering 617 horsepower, unveiling an even more exhilarating acceleration.

While the focus often gravitates towards sheer power, let us recognise the charm of the conventional six-cylinder heart that propels the X6 40i. It’s agility, and seamless refinement harmonise to create a driving experience that is both rapid and luxuriously smooth. The X6 40i and M60i models have the added advantage of adjustable dampers, allowing for a personalised ride experience. Wheel options ranging from 20 to 22 inches cater to drivers' discerning tastes, ensuring power, comfort, and style are at the forefront of this remarkable SUV's design.

Capacity for Towing and Payload

In a sector wherein pulling capability is sometimes overlooked, the BMW X6 offers an exceptional towing capacity. The X6's maximum towing capability is 7200 pounds when equipped with the optional towing kit.

Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy

The 2023 model of the BMW X6 could cover 21 miles per gallon when driven within the city, and on highways, it covered an impressive 25 miles per gallon with a combined average of 23 miles per gallon. So we're expecting the same fuel average for the upcoming model of the BMW X6. Still, if we express our expectations, the X6 should be able to cover 23 miles per gallon in the city streets and 27 miles per gallon on the highways, making the combined average 25 miles per gallon.

A look inside of BMX X6

BMW X6 Interior

The inside of the BMW X6 is, unsurprisingly, similar to that of most new BMW vehicles. That means it has costly supplies and soft textures, and two substantial 12.3-inch digital screens dominate the dashboard. While the instrument's front panel is stylish, the gauges are jumbled. Fortunately, having a head-up display is simpler. The remainder of the switches are equally well-organized. BMW's gesture controls are available but superfluous, allowing you to manage specific features like radio level by simply waving your palm in front of the infotainment screen. Standard features include 16-way power-adjustable front seats, customisable ambient lighting, heated front cushions, and passive entry.

While the back seat may accommodate two people, legroom and headroom are reduced by around 2 and 3 inches, respectively, compared to the boxier X5. Similarly, the BMW X6 has less luggage space between the rear seats. Back there, it barely held nine carry-on luggage in the testing; the X5 held 11.

Connectivity and infotainment

BMW X6 Display

The BMW X6 has a 12.3-inch touchscreen, pre-installed with the Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The screen can interact with standard buttons, voice instructions, a rotating centre control panel controller, and even hand gestures. The system's interface must be clarified, from sharp graphics to the menus. BMW will provide a free through-the-air update to iDrive 8.5 for the X6 in the summer of 2023. Upgrades include built-in navigation, upgraded USB ports, wireless charging capability, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The BMW X6 may also have an upgraded Harman/Kardon audio (standard on the M60i) or a Bowers & Wilkins unit.

Features for Driver Assistance and Safety

The expansive Bimmer arrives with an array of fundamental and elective driver-assistance functionalities. Among these, the following safety features stand out prominently:

  • Standard provisions encompass forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, ensuring a foundational layer of protection.

  • Further enhancing safety, the standard inclusions encompass blind-spot tracking and rear cross-traffic warning, bolstering situational awareness. For those seeking an elevated level of convenience, adaptable cruise control with stop-and-go technology is optional, empowering drivers with a seamless journey.

Warranty and Maintenance Safeguards

In the realm of warranty and maintenance, BMW positions itself alongside its premium counterparts, such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, through its competitive offerings. Among the luxury brands, BMW sets itself apart with a notable complimentary maintenance program.

  • The limited warranty’s ambit encompasses four years or 50,000 miles, reassuring owners with an extensive coverage period.

  • Mirroring this commitment, the powertrain warranty aligns with the same four years or 50,000 miles duration, contributing to an encompassing shield.

  • Setting a commendable industry standard, BMW ensures that the upkeep of your vehicle is seamlessly managed. Including a three-year or 36,000-mile maintenance program is a testament to the brand's dedication to your driving experience, further accentuating the value proposition.

Conclusion

Yes, the BMW X6 is more costly and more challenging to use than its more minor sister, the X5, but there's much to enjoy about this huge luxury fastback. First and foremost, it drives well. Even with its base six-cylinder engine, the X6 offers a pleasing blend of performance and elegance. It is a thrilling experience with the X6 M's astonishing speed in pre-refresh cars, but its suspension is uncomfortably rigid. Highway Assist will only enhance the BMW X6's capabilities.

Matt Watson from Carwow says.

“The BMW X6 was the coupe SUV that started the discussion – you either love or hate the way it looks. This one has a light-up grille. I’ll leave that there for you.”

Throughout the cabin, high-quality materials are used. The new curved touchscreen should be an upgrade over our past encounters with the technology. Oh, and even with less capacity than an X5, you can still fit most of your belongings; we moved between flats with one.
